I have never been a giant fan of beauty boxes, as most of them generally contain the products that I already know of or have been using but there are always exceptions to the rule, so when Sarita Coren, who runs one of the most visually beautiful and insightful blogs Edible Facial in the US put Beauty Heroes ( they used to be called Spa Heroes ) on my radar, I was intrigued to get in touch with the founder, Jeannie Jarnot.
Jeannie, who worked as spa director and healthy beauty expert, decided to create a monthly subscription box, rotating between skin, body, sun and haircare products and allowing you to discover products that harnesses the power of safe and potent ingredients. Each month a beauty brand is chosen and you receive two products, a full-sized one and its side-kick, so you end up with a value of more than US$ 39 that you pay, plus a chance to get safe ingredients directory, helpful tips and insights into brands that might not have been on your beauty radar but deserve to be. Jeanie and her team believe and focus on the fact that ingredients in your beauty products should be benefit you, be ethically sourced and effective. The fact that you get a full-sized product allows you to take time in trialling the brand and seeing, if it is effective for your needs, instead of dipping in and out of different products during the month.
Luckily Beauty heroes box has now extended its shipping to Europe and even Russia, so you don’t need to be left out, as the extra postage of US$15 is more than reasonable. In my case, I ended up paying extra taxes upon receipt but Jeannie addressed this issue straight away, so you don’t have to worry on this account.
My Beauty Heroes started with a discovery of a brand about which I haven’t heard previously of – Previse . My August box contained Previse Epidermis Plus Pre-sun Solution ( step 3.0 Defend ), that was created to help prevent sun damage from daily sun exposure, while aiding in the protection of skin cells, collagen density and elasticity over time, as well as Oil Free Tonic ( step 2.0 Nutrify ) that promises to help lighten and brighten the skin.
Previse Skincare, meaning ‘ to know or see in advance’ was founded by an environmentalist Sean Patrick Harrington. Instead of focussing just on the skin type, using patient genetics and behaviour via online questionnaire, an optimal skincare regiment is determined in order to keep skin healthy, resilient and glowing. According to Sean Patrick ‘people often forget that excessive UV exposure & aggressive ingredients damage the dermis’. Working with medical experts Previse evaluates 11 key characteristics including baseline melanin, geographical location where you live and skincare history, so apothecary products can be customised according to skin type. As a brand Previse considers an individual rather than broad demographics when recommending skincare regiment based on fresh, hand-crafted, small batch products, which is divided between six skin levels, from one to six. You can also examine the UV index online, ranging from 1, extremely low to 11+, which is extreme.
Previse researches ingredients and those that come out as either showing tendency to be carcinogenic or the science on them is inconclusive or are harmful to ecosystems are simply not included in the formulations..
When I received my Beauty Heroes box is was beautifully and brightly packaged and included a personalised note, a magnifying glass, cute red mask, Beauty heroes Pocket Guide on Ingredient Intelligence ( your little helper on ‘superpower’ ones, as well as well as ‘villains’ ), a guide on Previse Skincare plus the two products I mentioned earlier – the overall effect is of overwhelming thoughtfulness and attention to detail, helping you to have an educational experience, while enjoying the process of discovery of new products and brand.
Previse Skin Type 1-6, Step 2.0 Nutrify Oil free tonic infused with antioxidant rich daisy flower extract & hyaluronic acid to help lighten & brighten skin, 90 ml:
This product needs to be applied to your face ( clean fingers and hands please ! ) after cleansing and towel drying your face but before you apply your moisturiser or regular face serum. Put about three to five drops on the tips of your fingers ( Previse recommends using fingers and not the cotton wool because it will soak the products goodness, while fingers can benefit from this product as well .) warm them up and emulsify, before applying it. In circular motion extend the product into your hairline and temples, then do your lip area, under the eyes, cheeks. Finally, extend the product onto your chin and neckline. Our skin, cheeks, bridge of the nose and forehead get the most sun exposure, so make sure your apply this tonic to those areas, paying particular attention – you can also re-apply this product throughout the day.
The product looks like water but has a light gel texture when applied to the skin. Upon application the skin feels like it has been gently cooled down and within a minute the product sinks in almost without a trace, leaving your skin light and ready for your serum or moisturiser.
Nutrify Oil-Free Tonic is a potent antioxidant elixir that helps to hydrate your skin. It is oil-free, non-astringent & helps to hydrate skin, fights free radicals and waterborne pollutants or additives like chlorine. I have never come across a product like that, so have been more curious than usual to try it. it also contains a potent blend of antioxidants, as well as hydrating ingredients but it won’t form a moisture barrier to the skin, so do follow it up with a moisturiser or lotion or serum but make sure it’s not an oil-based one, as it might prevent penetration.
Do we need to avoid sun exposure after applying?
”Unlike retinol based products you do not need to avoid UV in the same way. Previse team advise on maintaining a healthy relationship with the sun. The sun after all aids our body in creating vitamin D. It is during prolonged exposure to UV that we recommend using a sunscreen. Our SunSheer is free of the ingredient villains. We do advise avoiding the chemical sunscreens and opt for physical based options, e.g. sunscreens with zinc and titanium.”
Ingredients: Aqueous Solution (Water, Saccharide Isomerate, Algae Extract, Chondrus Crispus Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Wasabia Japonica (Wasabi) Root), Bellis Perennis (Daisy) Flower Extract, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Glycerin, Xanthan Gum, Panthenol, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Extract, Hydrolyzed Chondrus Crispus Extract, Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel) Fruit Extract, Yeast Extract.
Previse Skin Type 6, Epidermis Plus pre-sun solution to help prevent sun damage from sun exposure, while aiding in the protection of skin cells, collagen density & elasticity over time. Step 3.0 Defend, 80 mls
Defend is the ideal barrier between your face and our increasingly harsh environment. This product was developed to deter oxidation from free radicals, while promoting vitamin D generation. Defend clarifies while soothing and hydrating for a clean and well protected appearance of skin and is suitable for both women and men. As with all Previse products Defend fragrance is derived from natural sources to provide aromatherapeutic benefits and yet is non-lingering but as with any smell it always comes down to personal preference – I like it, as it has herbal undertones.
Apply Defend Serum immediately after your application of Nutrify Tonic. Squeeze a small, nickel size amount of Defend into the palm of your hand. Emulsify by gently rubbing your palms together to warm the product for an even, all-over application.
Starting at the eyebrows use your fingertips to massage Defend in an upward, circular motion to your hairline and temples. Then starting just above your cheek bones and under your eyes gently massage in a circular motion down your cheeks, across the bridge of your nose, and into your upper lip area. Using your palms, massage remaining solution across your jaw line and chin, down your neck, and across the back of your neck to protect all areas that receive the most exposure to the elements. Your skin may feel slightly moist for a moment after application. This product has a light-weight gel-like lotion texture and has a little bit of whiteness when you massage it into the skin, but within seconds your skin feels light and beautifully prepped. I also like lavender undertones of the fragrance, that calms the mind yet perks up the senses.

I am not easily impressed but on this occasion I am very grateful to Jeannie for introducing me to the brand that I haven’t heard of and that’s one of the reason I can’t recommend enough a subscription to the Beauty Heroes box. It is not just a beautiful parcel that will land on your porch once a month, it will lead you on a path of thoughtfully caring for yourself, offer moments of indulgence, will expand your knowledge and introduce moments of quite contemplation and contentment into your life. And we all know that we need them in the midst of hectic schedules.
