At the time when the prices, as well as the number of ingredients going into beauty products seems to be climbing, some indie brands choose to stay accessible & make a positive impact via low numbers when it comes to list of ingredients. Mallow and White is a British beauty brand that has been winning hearts of customers, bloggers and beauty-award panels, yet it is run by one woman, Joanna White, who carves out creative time, while raising a family and looking after elderly parents, finding happiness and joy in each of her life’s chapters.
I have been using Restore Balm for the last month or so and interestingly this balm was one of Joanna’s first creations over eight years ago, so understandably it holds a special place in her heart. According to Joanna ‘it has been a firm favourite at craft fairs for all those years, with so many customers coming back for more with stories of transformed skin. The joy and wonder on customers faces is the reason I keep going!’
”This deeply intensive balm is 100% natural, vegan and made with organic, fair-traded shea butter. It is made with carefully selected ingredients to restore softness, balance and moisture to dry, thirsty skin. It is scented with an infusion of therapeutic essential oils to help restore balance and calm”.
Joanna wanted to create a product that was incredibly rich, yet light on the skin. Something that can be used all year round to soften, moisturise and protect the skin. A product that would protect the face from the harsh winds or weather conditions and during Joanna’s long winter walks with her dog – a starting point many dog owners can relate to, come rain or shine. Those are just some of the ‘bricks’ that form the foundation of the creative process for this product. Joanna was also thinking of the need to protect hands from the dryness, which are a consequence of dish washing that many of us do daily, several times a day, even with the dishwasher in the kitchen. In Joanna’s own words ‘I was looking to make a multi-purpose, multi-season product’.
The trio below are the ‘stars’ of this balm:
- Shea butter: this organic and fairly traded butter helps protect and heal dry skin, as it contains phytosterols, which help the skin regenerate and promote fresher looking appearance.
- Grapeseed Oil: this silky, lightweight oil absorbs quickly into the skin and encourages the production of elastin in the skin matrix.
- Pomegranate Oil: this wonderful oil is packed with vitamins and has been found to contain more anti-oxidants than red wine or green tea! It is claimed to help replenish skin that suffers from pollution damage, alleviate dryness and improve the texture of the skin.
This balm is very intensive, and only a ‘raindrop’-sized amount is needed. It almost instantly melts into the skin, be it on the face or body, as it comes into contact with the heat of your skin. When I first got my hands on this balm, I actually started using it on my body, straight after the shower, paying particular attention to hands, arms, elbows, legs & knees, appreciating quick absorption, almost instant feeling of softness of my skin and even a subtle glow, making skin appear healthier and more hydrated.
Your nostrils almost instantly smell the notes of calming lavender, as well as uplifting orange & geranium, encouraging you to take deeper breaths. Within minutes you might notice that you have been taking deeper breaths as well, quickly soothing & calming your nervous system as well, yet without making you feel sleepy. I was also delighted by the texture of the balm – it looks like whipped ricotta in a glass jar, yet has a firm feel when you dip your fingers into it, probably due to shea butter as it’s first ingredient. A seemingly simple product but masterfully crafted and with a very luxurious feel – a case in point that something very nurturing & of high quality doesn’t have to break the bank, while making you feel truly pampered.
Ingredients: Shea butter, Grapeseed Oil, Pomegranate Oil, Geranium essential oil, Lavender essential oil, Orange essential oil.
Charmingly, every Mallow & White order arrives in a cute, recyclable box filled with dry flowers and popcorn, which I always put out outside in the garden, only to observe birds & squirrels approaching, pecking & contentedly flying or running away with popcorn. A charming moment that I treasure, even when I don’t have the time to sit by the window and observe. Receiving such a parcel will always illicit a smile from you, boosting your mood, as well as being good in terms of recycling & ethical imprint we leave on the planet daily through our choices. Little things and good habits that we can pass to our children via our own actions.
On the subject of children: Joanna kindly enclosed a sample of her newer balm, Soothe, and when my daughter saw it, she asked, if she can smell it. She applied it to her hands, inhaled and happily pronounced that she can smell coconut, to which I replied that my nose smells cucumbers. ‘Oh yeah, that’s what I mean,’ she replied with a giggle, continuing to massage the balm into her little hands and then passing the tiny pot back to me. The pleasure of the conversation between two generations, allowing both sides to learn, question, discover and set a foundation for the future choices when it comes to beauty and selfceare. An opportunity to support a small business run by a very talented and humble woman, who cares for her consumers, as well as the planet. Those are definitely lessons worth learning for us & teaching to the children!
