I say treat your yoga mat the way you want to be treated – after all, if you are devoted to your yoga or meditation, you want to practise it where you feel safely comfortable. Spritz Wellness, a UK-based wellness brand, was launched in 2017 with the main aim of helping its customers lead a more balanced lifestyle through yoga and aromatherapy use.
The lifestyle brand was founded by the former marketing professional Laura Colucci, who has been a dedicated yoga teacher for several years now. Each and every one of her products – atmospheric mists, eye pillows & masks, hand sanitiser ( a product of our times going forward?), as well as the yoga mat mists – are crafted with positive intention at its core. The world might have slowed down due to the pandemic, but we are still drowning in information and demands on our personal and professional time. To be balanced is to be well, in both body and mind, and that’s why I was particularly curious to explore Laura’s yoga mat mists.
The last time I bought a mist to clean my yoga mat was when The Body Shop did a limited Ayurvedic line of yoga products (since then sadly discontinued). And I normally don’t really question how yoga studios or gyms clean their mats, only because I always bring my own. But lately I started wondering why I don’t see yoga mat sprays online or on retailers shelves – is it because many yogis create their own? In theory it is quite easy to create one at home using distilled water, witch hazel and essential oils, like lavender or cedarwood, depending on your personal preference. But at the end of the day it is also great to have an option to buy one & have it handy when you need it.
Spritz Wellness Yoga Mat Sprays (there are two unique blends, RELAX and ENERGISE) are designed to clean yoga and fitness mats. Formulated with antiseptic and anti-viral properties of tea tree oil at the core, you can choose one with Lavender for a relaxing state of mind or an energising one with refreshing Lemongrass. Both sprays are fine mists and their scent is subtle, rather than overpowering. Product scents are of course always subjective, but you definitely don’t want an overwhelming product when it comes to proximity to your face and hands. Each bottle comes in protective tube packaging, which will fit into your gym bag or yoga mat holder, in case you want to take it with you to the studio where you workout – when they finally reopen post-pandemic! The packaging is also recyclable or you can use the exterior packaging tube as a pencil holder – for your own or your children’s desk.
“I use my spray every time before I practise. You can either use them before or after, it’s your choice. You can allow the mat to air dry or wipe it clean”Top use Tip from Laura Colucci, Spritz Wellness founder & yoga teacher
Before you use the spray, shake the bottle gently & then mist the air around the mat or directly on it – just make sure it doesn’t get into your eyes. If you spray it directly on the mat, you can either let it dry naturally or just wipe over the mat with a flannel or soft cotton cloth.
When it comes to ingredients, there are Aqua, Tea Tree (melaleuca alternifolia) and then either Lavender (lavandula angustifolia) or Lemongrass (cymbopogon citratus).
- Lavender: can give a boost to immune system, all-round marvellous essential oil
- Lemongrass: good for headache or stress-relief
- Tea tree: can give respiratory system a boost. Like lavender, one of those essential oils that can be used neat on the skin. However, any natural essential oil is still a powerful chemical, so should be used responsibly.
While the Lavender Spray is absolutely lovely, it is the zestiness of Lemongrass Energise that particularly tickled my senses, making me wonder why I haven’t got that oil in my ‘arsenal’ at home. Another pleasant surprise was the fact that I didn’t ‘slip and slide’ after spraying it directly on my yoga mat before practise. Just contain your enthusiasm and don’t go overboard with the number of sprays before your practise – and you will have a livelier environment to practise your yoga or meditative calm than you normally do.
Each time I settle myself into a ‘child’s pose’ now, my face flat on the mat, I inhale the delicate scent of lemongrass or lavender and my face breaks down into a involuntary smile. Because little pleasures like that now matter more than ever before. As the well-known ad slogan states, every little helps. This spray certainly does that!
