MO MI is a US-based haircare brand (both for humans and pets) that is focussed on mindful and sustainable living. With plant-based formulas bursting with micronutrients, antioxidants and botanicals that are ethically sourced, each product aims to help your hair to look great AND feel good. When co-founders Diane and Damon added a new product to the range, called MO MI Scalp Essence, it made sense to include it in my Festive Gift List, because whatever gender or age, we ALL care about our hair, particularly when it comes to its health, growth and volume.
While Diane, who worked & travelled widely in Asia and Europe, truly believes in the importance of daily self care rituals that underpin everyday wellbeing, Damon, who is a professional hair colourist and stylist, is focussed on tailoring haircare products based on individual’s needs. With invaluable experience and extensive knowledge of not just haircare products, but styling, colour, product efficacy, and obsession with even the minuscule detail, you can be assured that all aspects of MO MI hair care are considered by Damon and Diane before a product is launched into the world.
MO MI Scalp essence is suitable for all hair types and you can use it by itself, or for more noticeable effect, follow it up with the ‘combing therapy’ that involves you massaging you scalp, boosting circulation to hair follicles in the process. It is an ancient beauty practise that also helps you feel more relaxed and calmer – additional bonus of a thoughtful, rather than automatic, haircare routine! It’s also important to remember that our hair cycle is part of hair’s own ‘ecosystem’ that goes through phases of growth, rest and shedding and by supporting those phases we can make a difference to hair’s appearance.
The Essence will help make your scalp clearer and smoother and works particularly well for dry hair and scalp (use 1-2 dropper full every couple of days), as well as clogged scalp. It is also a good product for those people who have problematic circulation to their extremities, particularly felt during colder months of the year, when blood vessels get a little restricted. You can also apply it to hair ends, as well as your nails and cuticles, after you finish your scalp massage and might have a little bit of an excess of the product left on your fingertips.
Star ingredients of MO MI Essence:
- Hyaluronic acid: acts as a humectant to lock in moisture for the scalp, plumps hair follicles and reduces frizz.
- Sake: rice wine cleanses the scalp and supports healthy hair growth and natural shine.
- White Tea (Camellia Sinensis): an antioxidant that protects the scalp and hair from damage and encourages overall hair health.
- Fermented Rice Water: an ancient hair tonic that is used to make hair stronger, smoother, and more resilient.
- Cooling blend of Peppermint, Lavender, Clary Sage and Juniper Berry feels both clean and refreshing.
Cleansing and soothing essential oils: Peppermint (deeply cleansing, refreshing and anti-inflammatory, may invigorate hair growth), Lavender (calming and antimicrobial), Clary Sage (calming, may balance hormones to offset stressors), Juniper Berry (antiseptic properties may strengthen roots and increase follicle’s ability to grow healthy hair).
A good tip for using this scalp essence is to pair it with the gua sha comb or hair massager, which will in synergy allow you to achieve the following:
➽ Stimulate healthy circulation and nurturing of the healthy hair growth
➽ To naturally boost hair’s shine, hydration and scalp cleansing
➽ To release scalp tension and
➽ To gently detangle without causing breakage and to help distribute the Essence better through the hair.
Create a central parting. Add one or two pumps of scalp essence along the part and massage into the scalp using your fingertips. Don’t apply any pressure, go with the light touch – the best tip here is to massage in the way that feels good! Create additional section, gently massage with fingertips. If you are using a comb, scalp brush or gua sha comb glide it from hairline to nape, side to side, making gentle short strokes above ears and along the entire head and then repeating the action. If you fancy a little bit of guidance, look at the videos posted on Diane’s Instagram to help you master the correct moves and enhance not just your hair care routine, but help your body settle into a more relaxed state.
I tend to massage this Essence into my scalp in slow, circular motion and find it very relaxing. As the weather started to cool down, I particularly enjoy applying the essence, that feels like water with a little gel-like bounce, and feeling the cooling sensation spread all over my scalp. You don’t tend to experience such sensation when massaging a hair oil into scalp before shampooing it out, so this product will be particularly welcome if you live in a colder climate, have dry scalp or wear a hat regularly.

Since I started using this Essence I noticed that my scalp does feel less dry (moisture seems to be locked-in, despite working in close proximity to a radiator and wearing hats) & my hair feels fuller. The combination of Sake that supports and stimulates healthier hair growth and Caffeine and essential oils that support scalp and hair health also has quite an innovative, very pleasant, light texture that doesn’t make hair or scalp feel greasy. Instead the effect that you notice is the hair that seems to be much better maintained with seemingly less effort – I haven’t changed my hair care routine or diet during the time that I started using the Essence every few days.
Diane tends to use this product weekly, while Damon uses it daily by his own admission. Our hair changes with time, in the same way our faces and bodies do, but there are still few products that help our hair look and feel better in a noticeable, rather than superficial way. This Essence falls into that ‘efficacious’ category for me and proves that innovation in haircare using ancient traditions and modern science, that also includes the synergy of potent plants, is something that we can all benefit from, irrespective of the state of our hair and scalp.
