Reading is a great pleasure for me and I am always looking for books by the authors that I love but finding someone new, whose books I have never read, and who take me on the journey of worldly discovery gives me a high every time.
Michele Robertsis a well-established author, poet and writer of essays who was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres-one of France’s highest accolades-in 2000 but it’s only recently that I discovered her newly published book.
When I saw the cover of her latest collection of short stories ‘MUD:stories of sex and love’at Waterstones, something made me pause, take the book off the shelf and buy it. Inside there were 14 stories, some shortish, some long and every single one was different, even though the author’s voice was prominent in each one of them. My favourites turned out to be ‘Vegetarian in France’ and ‘Sleepers’, an imaginary story of Jane’s Eyre’s illegitimate daughter Adele and the bitter maid who ends up looking after her.
Michele Roberts creatively and wisely explores women’s desires, memories and paths in life, giving you a window into someone else’s life while assessing yours-an evocative treat!
