Having recently read Clemence von Muffling ‘Ageless Beauty’ book, I came across a great saying that really distills the essence of why every woman should have a mask in her skincare arsenal. ‘The difference between good skin and great skin is masking. Doing an intensive treatment at least once a week takes your skincare routine to the next level’, according to Detox Market‘s co-founder Romain Gaillard. This is something that I tend to agree with, rather than with Caroline Hiron‘s recent Red magazine editorial, where she says that she has fallen out of love with masks. If like me, you do like masking for all the right reasons, then recent launch from British natural skincare brand Nourish London, Probiotic Multi-Mineral Repair Mask, is definitely worthy of attention.
This mask first came into my field of vision during the exhibition at Excel in April and I got to talk about its merits with Anne Hahlo, one of brand’s most knowledgable team members. I ‘played’ with the tester, smelling it and applying it to my hands, but properly started testing it on my face from the latter part of June, when the heatwave hasn’t yer reached the British shores. Now, having used it throughout the heatwave, as well as in the hotel bathrooms in France and Spain on my summer travels, I can share the knowledge and tips that you might find useful in your skincare routine as well.
Probiotic Multi-Mineral Repair Mask is an innovative product that provides the skin with the mineral power of magnesium, zinc, iron and copper, as well as Damask Rose and Lavender. The mask will deliver minerals essential for skin repair to the dermis, sooth the skin post sun exposure, improve hydration and boost collagen production, while improving firmness and repairs the cells.
A proper intake of minerals from foods and supplements are essential for driving the chemical reactions which keep our internal organs in good health. According to Dr. Pauline Hili, founder of Nourish Skincare London and fellow of the Royal Society of Chemists ‘Recent studies have demonstrated that feeding the dermis topically with key minerals is essential for the skin’s optimum function, if you want to have a healthy, clear complexion. Which is why I have developed the new mask, which will make every difference to skincare routines, as it packs a punch with skin benefits‘.
With regular use (once or twice a week) of Probiotic Multi-Mineral Repair Mask you can expect the following results:
- repair existing skin damage
- increased collagen production and elasticity
- improved barrier protection
- improved hydration
- rebalancing of sebum production
The star ingredient of this mask is Magnesium, a mineral that is normally associated with good sleeping patters and calming down the nervous system. According to Dr. Hili ‘magnesium can help address inflammation of the dermis, which can lead to acne and rosacea, as it calms the skin and dampens the irritating effects of pollution, while also rebalancing sebum production for the oily skin. What is also fantastic is that magnesium works for all skin types, thus having the ability to help anyone‘.
Being an organic skincare specialist and tirelessly studying scientific facts behind the remarkable properties of plant extracts, Dr. Hili doesn’t do things by half. When developing the formula for this mask, she also factored in other minerals that synergistically help achieve optimum results for the skin. In addition to the above mentioned Magnesium, she added Zinc (to help repair skin damage), Copper (to increase collagen and cellular repair), Iron (to oxygenate the skin) and Silicon (to enhance skin texture and appearance).
Another interesting aspect of this mask’s formulation is that minerals are sourced from a probiotic powerhouse. What does it mean in the context of my skin, rather than my gut you might ask? Well, according to Dr. Hili ‘ the minerals in our ingredients are produced with the innovative use of probiotics in a fermentation process. They are transformed into bio-active materials – or minerals – that are easily recognised by the skin’ and thus easily accepted by the our skin’s cells.
But that’s not all – you will also find a potent blend of three organic oils – Australian Macadamia Nut, Camellia and Calendula (marigold) – that provide essential omega oils to enhance the softness and suppleness of the skin, as well as the antioxidant benefits provided by Maqui Berry and Marine Algae Extract that helps increase collagen production of the skin.
Using a face mask must be a pleasant experience for me, particularly as it is a signal to slow down and enjoy the much needed ‘me-time’, something that many women struggle with, in their endless quest to look after others. Factors like texture (I know of the benefits of the currently popular sheet masks, but unless I am on the facialist’s couch, I find them drippy or scary or just not practical in the home setting, even if I am taking a bath) and scent do play an important part. This mask is softly scented with a organic damask floral water (pretty and feminine come to mind) and soothing, calming organic lavender (imparts instant calm and makes you think of being lost in the lavender fields in Provence in the summer).
When you apply this mask to clean, dry skin, it feels like a light moisturiser, that fairly quickly sinks into your skin without a trace, after you massage it all over the face and neck, omitting the eye area. Then you can get on with whatever you are doing, rather than hide from your other half or family (another bonus, as I don’t fancy walking around my home looking like a colourful ogre). According to the instructions you should leave it on for five minutes, but as I feel fairly relaxed with it on, in part due to its soothing scent, I have been leaving it on for longer, sometimes for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the time of the evening and then washing it off with warm water or wiping it off with a warm, damp face cloth. You can also leave it on overnight and not wake up to the scary site of a coloured pillowcase and slightly less in love with you partner.
Over time and particularly in hot weather, I have found this mask to have a combined soothing (particularly after extended sun exposure) and moisturising effect on my skin, so much so that there weren’t any dryness or peeling after long days spent in the surf and sunshine. An additional bonus is that the mask doesn’t only come in a full, 30ml size, but the brand also created a generous 5ml single use sachet (that easily gives you two or even three mask applications, depending on how generously you spread it all over you face), which comes handy if you want to use the mask as you shower after a gym workout or take it on your travels. Practical natural beauty at its best.
